Each time I failed miserably, because often the image is a composite and with Gimp and paint it is not an easy task to remove image background. Often, with these tools, not only does the background become transparent, but part of the image itself is lost as well.

Okay, so I'm having a problem where whenever i set the blend mode of a layer to luminosity, overlay, or screen it turns the layer transparent. It just disappears. It is still technically there but I just doesn't display for some reason. When I set the layer back to normal it reappears. This problem persists when I start a new project and isn't layer specific, if its set to one of the three blend modes it will not display.Please help me, I'm at my wits end and can't finish anything with this problem.
